About The Event
Joe Fox, Educator from the Fulton Mansion, will present A Lone Star Rising in South Texas: A History of the Lone Star Brewery Company from 1884 to Today.
On September 13th, 1884, the Lone Star Brewery opened to a wide celebration in San Antonio, Texas. The new brewery promised to turn San Antonio into the “St. Louis of the Southwest” and greatly add to the prosperity of South Texas. However, the rise of a modern brewery with the influence of beer baron Adolphus Busch raised important questions from Texans about their new national beer: Will Busch monopolize local industry? Will the consumption of alcohol degrade our city? Perhaps the most important question of all, is it really Texan? Using modern brewing techniques and marketing in the local community, the Lone Star Brewing Company created a unique brand that through 1884 to the present, navigated the changing political and cultural trends of the Lone Star State to become a part of Texas culture.
